Fine Art Darkroom Prints in San Francisco
Hand-printed black and white darkroom prints from your session, or from your own existing negatives — museum-quality, archival paper, printed by hand under a real safelight.
What to Expect
Hand-printed black and white darkroom prints from your session, or from your own existing negatives — museum-quality, archival paper, printed by hand under a real safelight. If you already have film negatives sitting in a drawer, this service turns them into real, printed, wall-worthy art. This is a flat-fee, per-print service, not an hourly session — it’s built for anyone who already has the image and just needs it made into a real, physical print.
A remarkable number of real, meaningful negatives exist in shoeboxes, envelopes, and old camera bags across the Bay Area — family history that was properly shot on film decades ago but never actually printed the way it deserved, or printed once on paper that’s since yellowed and faded. This service exists specifically to give those negatives a real, archival print — not a scan, not a digital reproduction, an actual hand-printed photograph.

Book nowText (415) 573-FILMPricing & What's Included
This is a flat-fee, per-print service rather than an hourly session — pricing depends on print size and quantity, discussed and confirmed once we’ve reviewed your negatives together.
A smaller test print is typically made first for an important negative to confirm exposure and contrast before committing to the final full-size print, so cost and expectations are aligned before final printing.
From Booking to Delivery
Bring or Send Negatives
You can drop off negatives in person or arrange shipping for negatives you already have — anything from a single frame you love to a full roll you want fully printed.
Consultation on Selection & Size
For a full roll, we’ll help you review and select the strongest frames if you don’t already know which ones you want printed, and talk through sizing based on how the print will be displayed.
Test Print
For an important or larger print, we typically make a smaller test print first to confirm exposure, contrast, and cropping before committing to the final full-size print — this avoids wasting archival paper on a print you’re not happy with.
Final Printing
Once approved, the final print is made by hand under the enlarger — dodging and burning specific areas as needed, the same technique darkroom printers have used for decades to bring out detail in shadows and highlights that a flat digital print can’t replicate.
Delivery
Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days for hand-printed darkroom prints, ready for framing.
Why This Session Is Shot on Real Film
A huge number of real, meaningful family and personal negatives exist in drawers, boxes, and old albums — never actually printed properly, or printed decades ago on paper that’s degraded. This service exists specifically because a digital scan of an old negative, while useful for sharing, isn’t the same object as a real archival print — and for photos that matter, the physical print is usually what people actually want on a wall.
The dodging-and-burning process used in hand darkroom printing is also something no consumer inkjet printer or digital lab replicates the same way — a skilled printer can selectively lighten or darken specific parts of an image during exposure, pulling detail out of a dark shadow or holding back a blown-out sky, in a way that produces a genuinely different tonal result than a flat automated print.
And archival paper matters more than most people realize — a properly processed and stored archival print can last well over a century without significant fading, versus consumer photo paper that can visibly degrade within just a few decades.
There’s also something worth naming plainly: a digital scan of an old negative is genuinely useful for sharing, but it isn’t the same object as the negative itself deserves. A negative that survived decades in a drawer represents real, irreplaceable history — printing it properly, by hand, on paper built to last, treats it with the weight it actually has.
Care & Handling of Your Negatives
Old negatives are more resilient than most people assume, but they do deserve careful handling. We store and handle every negative brought in by clean edges only, using cotton gloves for older or more fragile film, and never touch the emulsion side directly — fingerprints and oils can etch into film over time and are effectively permanent once they do.
Negatives are returned to you after printing along with the finished print, stored in an acid-free sleeve if they didn’t already come in one. If a negative shows visible dust, minor scratches, or age-related wear, we address what we can during the printing process — careful dodging and burning can often compensate for minor imperfections that a flat digital scan would show plainly.
For negatives with more significant physical damage — torn sprocket holes, mold damage, or heavy curling from improper storage — we’ll assess and discuss what’s realistically achievable before printing, rather than promising a result the negative’s condition can’t support.
How to Prepare
✓If you’re bringing existing negatives, handle them by the edges only — oils from fingers can damage the emulsion over time.
✓Bring negatives in a protective sleeve or envelope if you have one, to avoid scratches in transit.
✓If you already know the exact size you want, tell us up front; if not, we’ll help you decide based on the image and its intended display.
✓For a gift or a specific deadline, mention it when you book so we can plan turnaround accordingly.
✓If you’re unsure which frames from a roll are worth printing, bring the whole roll — we’re glad to help you pick.

Fine Art Darkroom Prints — Common Questions
Do you print from negatives I already have, not just ones you shot?
Yes — this service explicitly accepts your own existing negatives, whether they’re from a recent roll or decades-old family film.
What if my negatives are old or slightly damaged?
Bring them in and we’ll assess condition — even negatives with minor scratches or dust can often still produce a strong print with careful handling and printing technique.
Can I get the same negative printed in multiple sizes?
Yes — once we have your negative, additional prints in different sizes can be ordered at any time without needing to re-shoot anything.
Do you also provide a digital scan alongside the print?
Yes, as an add-on — the Digital Scans Add-On can be paired with this service if you want both a physical print and a digital file.
What paper do you print on?
Museum-quality archival photo paper, chosen specifically for longevity and tonal range in hand darkroom printing.
Can this be a gift for a family member?
Yes — this is a common and meaningful gift request, especially for old family negatives. Mention any deadline when you book.
Do you accept negatives in formats other than 35mm?
Ask when you bring your negatives in — while 35mm is our primary focus, we can assess other film formats on a case-by-case basis.
Can you restore or repair damaged negatives before printing?
We can compensate for minor wear and imperfections during printing through careful dodging and burning; for more significant physical damage, we’ll assess and discuss realistic options with you first.
How many prints can I order from a single negative over time?
As many as you want, whenever you want — the negative doesn’t degrade from repeated printing, so additional prints can be ordered years later with the same quality.
Can you print negatives that aren’t black and white, like color film?
This studio specializes in black and white darkroom printing — ask when you bring color negatives in and we’ll discuss whether it’s something we can accommodate.
What’s the difference between a darkroom print and a print made from a digital scan?
A darkroom print is exposed directly from the negative through an enlarger onto photo paper — no digital step in between. A print made from a scan goes through a digital printer, which is a genuinely different process with a different tonal result.
Can I bring in negatives from a different photographer, not just my own?
Yes — as long as you have the physical negatives and the right to reproduce them, we can print from any negative brought in.
Do you offer a consultation before committing to a large or expensive print order?
Yes — for larger orders, a preliminary conversation about sizing and selection is standard practice before committing to final printing.
Can prints be matted or framed as part of this service?
We focus on the print itself; ask when you book if you need a recommendation for local framing or matting services.
What is the general turnaround time if I need prints by a specific date, like a holiday or event?
Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days — mention your deadline when booking and we’ll flag it as a priority if timing is tight.
Do you offer a discount for printing a large batch of negatives from the same family archive?
Ask when you bring in a larger batch — pricing for volume orders is discussed directly based on the number of prints involved.
Can you tell how old a negative is just by looking at it?
Often, yes — film stock, sprocket hole patterns, and general condition give useful clues, though we’ll rely on whatever family history you can share too.
What’s the best way to store negatives at home between print orders?
A cool, dry, dark place in an acid-free sleeve or envelope is ideal — avoid attics, basements, and direct sunlight, which accelerate degradation over time.
Can you print a negative larger than 16x20 for a statement piece?
Custom larger sizes are available on request — ask about specific dimensions and we’ll confirm what the negative can support at that scale.
Do you offer proof prints before committing to the final archival print?
Yes — a smaller test print is typically made first for an important negative to confirm exposure and contrast before the final full-size print.
Can you print a very small negative format, like a half-frame camera’s exposures, at a larger size?
Ask when you bring in negatives — smaller or unusual formats can often still be enlarged successfully, though results depend on the negative’s original quality.
Do you offer a rush service for prints needed for an unexpected occasion, like a memorial?
Reach out with your specific timeline — we understand some print requests are time-sensitive and will do what we can to accommodate.
Is there a limit to how old or fragile a negative can be before it can’t be printed anymore?
Most negatives, even quite old ones, can still produce a usable print — we’ll always assess condition honestly before you commit to an order.
Can I schedule an in-person consultation before deciding to bring in negatives, just to ask questions?
Yes — feel free to reach out with questions before committing to bringing negatives in.
Are archival prints resistant to normal light exposure if displayed on a wall?
Yes, properly processed archival prints are designed to resist significant fading under normal indoor display conditions for many decades.
What film stock do you shoot?
Primarily Kodak Tri-X 400 for its classic black and white grain, with Ilford HP5 as an alternative depending on the light and the session. Every roll is developed by hand, never sent to an AI upscaling tool.
Do I get digital scans, or only physical prints?
Both, if you want them. The Digital Scans Add-On gets you high-resolution scans of your negatives for sharing and printing elsewhere, alongside your physical darkroom prints.
How long does it take to get my photos?
Darkroom prints typically take 5-7 business days to develop and print by hand. Digital scans, when added, are usually ready in 2-3 business days.
Do you shoot corporate headshots?
Yes — black and white corporate headshots are one of our most-booked sessions, for individuals and full teams in San Francisco.
Can you shoot outside San Francisco?
Yes, within the Bay Area — reach out with your location and we'll confirm travel details before booking.
Do you rent out vintage cameras?
Yes — the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental service includes a real 35mm body plus guidance on how to use it for your own shoot.
What if it rains on my session day?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session. Studio sessions are unaffected either way.
Do you retouch or edit photos with AI?
Never. Every edit is done by hand in the darkroom or with traditional printing techniques — no AI photo editing, no AI-generated portraits, ever.
Can I book a group or family session with more than 5 people?
Yes — larger group and family sessions are available, just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, gift certificates are available for any session type — text or call to arrange one.
What sizes do darkroom prints come in?
Standard sizes run from 5x7 up to 16x20, all hand-printed on archival photo paper. Custom sizes are available on request.
Is there a deposit required to book?
Yes, a deposit secures your date; the balance is due at the session. Exact terms are confirmed when you book.
Can I reschedule if something comes up?
Yes, with reasonable notice — reach out as soon as you know and we'll find a new date.
Do you shoot weddings outside the traditional package?
Yes — partial-day coverage and elopements are available in addition to full-day black and white film wedding photography.
