Family Portrait Session in San Francisco
Black and white film family portraits — one negative per frame, hand-developed, printed to last. The kind of photo that still looks right in twenty years.
What to Expect
Black and white film family portraits — one negative per frame, hand-developed, printed to last. The kind of photo that still looks right on a wall in twenty years, not a digital file buried in a phone’s camera roll that nobody prints anymore. Whether it’s a family of three or a full multi-generational group, this session is built to produce one real, lasting print, not a folder of five hundred nearly-identical digital shots.
Most families already have thousands of digital photos and almost none of them printed — a genuine, unusual gap between how many photos get taken and how many actually get displayed anywhere. This session is built specifically to close that gap: one deliberate session that produces a real, physical portrait meant to actually hang somewhere, not join the pile.

Family sessions run at the flat $300/hr rate, typically booked for 2 hours to allow time for a larger or more active group. Larger multi-generational families may need slightly more time — mention group size when booking so we can plan accordingly.
Darkroom prints, sized for framing, are the primary deliverable for this service; the Digital Scans Add-On is available if you also want to share the portrait digitally with extended family.
From Booking to Delivery
Planning Around the Family
Before the session, we talk through the group — how many people, any small kids who need a shorter, more flexible timeline, and whether it’s indoor/studio or on location. Larger or multi-generational groups get extra time built in.
Warm-Up
The first few minutes are unstructured — letting kids move around, letting everyone get comfortable being near a camera — because a family portrait where everyone looks tense defeats the purpose.
The Session
We shoot a mix of directed group frames and more candid, in-between moments — a parent laughing at something a kid did, a grandparent’s hand on a shoulder — because those in-between frames often end up being the ones a family loves most.
Development
Rolls are developed by hand that week — group portraits get extra attention during development since even exposure across a wider frame with more people takes more careful handling than a single-subject portrait.
Delivery
Darkroom prints, ready for framing, typically take 5-7 business days. Digital scans are available as an add-on if you want to share the portrait with family who couldn’t be there.
Why This Session Is Shot on Real Film
A family portrait is one of the few photos most people actually intend to keep for decades — on a wall, in a frame, passed down. Digital files don’t hold up well to that intention: phones get replaced, cloud accounts lapse, formats change. A physical film negative and a printed photograph don’t have any of those failure points.
Black and white also does something specific and useful for group portraits: it treats every person in the frame with the same honest, unfiltered attention. There’s no algorithm quietly smoothing one person’s skin more than another’s, no inconsistent auto-enhancement across different faces in the same frame — just even, real light on everyone.
And for multi-generational families especially, there’s something fitting about using the same physical process — film, chemistry, a hand-printed photograph — that produced the family photos already hanging in a grandparent’s house. It’s not nostalgia for its own sake; it’s continuity.
There’s a practical durability argument too: phones get lost, cracked, replaced, and cloud accounts occasionally get locked out or deleted by accident. A physical negative and a printed photograph don’t depend on a password, a subscription, or a working device to still exist in twenty years.
Best San Francisco Spots for This Session
See the full services list or check every San Francisco neighborhood we shoot in on the homepage.
Golden Gate Park
Wide-open lawns, gardens, and trees give kids room to move naturally instead of being confined to a tight studio frame.
Dolores Park
Classic SF skyline backdrop with palm trees — a relaxed, sunny setting families often already know well.
Noe Valley
Quiet Victorian residential streets, ideal for a more intimate, less crowded location than a major park.
The Studio
Full lighting control, especially useful for very young kids or larger groups where consistent light matters more than a scenic backdrop.
How to Prepare
✓Coordinate outfits loosely (similar tones, not matching outfits) — solid mid-tones photograph best in black and white.
✓For families with young kids, schedule the session around nap time, not against it — a well-rested toddler makes a huge difference.
✓Bring a favorite small toy or snack as a distraction tool for younger kids — we’ll work it into the session naturally.
✓Arrive with hair and outfits mostly set — we have some time for small touch-ups but aren’t a full styling team.
✓Let extended family know the schedule in advance if it’s a larger group — punctuality matters more with more people to coordinate.

Family Portrait Session — Common Questions
How many people can you fit in one family portrait?
We can accommodate larger multi-generational groups — just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time and, if needed, a location with enough space.
What if a young kid won’t cooperate during the shoot?
It happens on nearly every family session with small kids. We build in extra time and shoot candidly through the chaos — some of the best frames come from an unposed, real moment, not a forced smile.
Can we do an outdoor and indoor session in the same booking?
For most groups, one location works best within the booked time — ask when scheduling if you want to split time between two settings.
Do you offer a print large enough for a big family wall display?
Yes, up to 16x20 as a standard size, with custom larger sizes available on request through the Fine Art Darkroom Prints service.
Can grandparents or extended family order their own copies of the print?
Yes — additional prints from the same negative can be ordered later without a new shoot.
Is this good for a holiday card photo?
Yes, with enough lead time before the season — book early if you need prints or scans back before a specific mailing deadline.
Do you photograph pets as part of a family session?
Yes — pets are welcome as part of the family group, just let us know in advance so we can plan timing and patience accordingly.
What if some family members can only make part of the session?
We can plan a schedule around partial attendance and shoot different groupings at different times within the booking, if arranged in advance.
Do you do maternity or newborn-inclusive family sessions?
Yes — mention the specific occasion when booking so we can plan appropriate timing, especially for sessions involving a very young baby.
Can we schedule a family session to become an annual tradition?
Yes — many families book an annual session; reach out ahead of your preferred time of year to lock in a date.
What if one family member really dislikes being photographed?
It’s more common than you’d think. We take extra time to help reluctant subjects relax, and candid, in-motion frames often work better for them than posed ones.
Do you photograph blended or non-traditional family structures?
Yes — every family looks different, and this session is built around documenting your actual family, however it’s structured.
Can grandparents be photographed separately as well as with the whole group?
Yes — mention this when booking so we can plan time for both group and smaller subset groupings.
How do you handle family sessions with a wide age range of kids, from toddlers to teens?
We plan pacing around the youngest kids’ attention span first, then work in more directed frames with older kids and adults once the group is warmed up.
Can we schedule a family portrait around a specific milestone, like a new baby or an anniversary?
Yes — mention the occasion when booking so we can plan framing and timing around what the session is meant to mark.
Do you offer any options for families who want a more candid, documentary-style session over posed portraits?
Yes — while we always shoot some directed frames, the overall approach can lean more candid or more traditional depending on what you prefer; let us know when booking.
What if the weather changes our plans for an outdoor family session?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session, or can move to a studio session if that works better for your schedule.
Can extended family members order their own prints separately after the session?
Yes — additional prints from the same session negatives can be ordered individually by any family member afterward.
Do you offer sessions specifically to document a family through a big move or life transition?
Yes — this is a meaningful, less common request, and we’re glad to plan a session around a specific life transition.
Can we bring a family pet along even if it’s not the main focus of the shoot?
Yes — pets can be included in a portion of the session even if the main focus is the family.
What’s the best time of year for an outdoor family session in San Francisco?
Fall tends to have the clearest, most consistent light, though every season has its own character — we can help you decide based on your preferred setting.
Can a family session be planned around a specific pet, like a family dog that’s aging or unwell?
Yes — sessions built specifically around documenting a beloved pet with the family are a meaningful, common request; mention any special considerations when booking.
Do you offer any specific advice for coordinating outfits across a large multi-generational group?
Aim for a shared color palette rather than identical outfits — a mix of solid, complementary mid-tones photographs far better in black and white than an exact match across everyone.
Can a family session include a special one-on-one portrait pairing, like just the siblings together?
Yes — smaller sub-groupings within the larger family session are common; mention which specific pairings matter to you when booking.
Is a weekday session an option for families with school-age kids, or only weekends?
Weekend sessions are most common for school-age families, though weekday afternoon or evening slots are available if that fits your schedule better.
Do you offer sessions during school breaks or holidays when families are more available?
Yes — breaks and holidays are popular booking windows for family sessions; book early since these dates fill quickly.
Can we request the session start a little later if morning routines with young kids are unpredictable?
Yes — timing can be adjusted around what actually works for your family; let us know when booking.
Do you offer a brief planning call before the session for larger or more complex family groups?
Yes — for larger multi-generational groups, a short planning conversation beforehand can help the day run smoothly.
What film stock do you shoot?
Primarily Kodak Tri-X 400 for its classic black and white grain, with Ilford HP5 as an alternative depending on the light and the session. Every roll is developed by hand, never sent to an AI upscaling tool.
Do I get digital scans, or only physical prints?
Both, if you want them. The Digital Scans Add-On gets you high-resolution scans of your negatives for sharing and printing elsewhere, alongside your physical darkroom prints.
How long does it take to get my photos?
Darkroom prints typically take 5-7 business days to develop and print by hand. Digital scans, when added, are usually ready in 2-3 business days.
Do you shoot corporate headshots?
Yes — black and white corporate headshots are one of our most-booked sessions, for individuals and full teams in San Francisco.
Can you shoot outside San Francisco?
Yes, within the Bay Area — reach out with your location and we'll confirm travel details before booking.
Do you rent out vintage cameras?
Yes — the Vintage Camera Consultation & Rental service includes a real 35mm body plus guidance on how to use it for your own shoot.
What if it rains on my session day?
We reschedule at no charge for weather that would ruin an outdoor session. Studio sessions are unaffected either way.
Do you retouch or edit photos with AI?
Never. Every edit is done by hand in the darkroom or with traditional printing techniques — no AI photo editing, no AI-generated portraits, ever.
Can I book a group or family session with more than 5 people?
Yes — larger group and family sessions are available, just note the group size when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, gift certificates are available for any session type — text or call to arrange one.
What sizes do darkroom prints come in?
Standard sizes run from 5x7 up to 16x20, all hand-printed on archival photo paper. Custom sizes are available on request.
Is there a deposit required to book?
Yes, a deposit secures your date; the balance is due at the session. Exact terms are confirmed when you book.
Can I reschedule if something comes up?
Yes, with reasonable notice — reach out as soon as you know and we'll find a new date.
Do you shoot weddings outside the traditional package?
Yes — partial-day coverage and elopements are available in addition to full-day black and white film wedding photography.
